What’s Happening

The '09 Artown events season is upon us. March 15 at the Grand Sierra Resort & Casino will be a “must see” concert you won't forget. It's exciting to see the pre-July programming taking shape so nicely with Artown. Make your plans to enjoy the Springtime concerts and event series.

2009 Artist Selected for Artown Festival Look

Reno mixed media artist Candace Nicol was selected to create the signature look for the 14th annual Artown festival. Chosen in an anonymous review by members of the arts community, Nicol is now finalizing the concepts that will eventually serve as the basis for all the festival marketing components including the annual poster, collateral and Web site. Watch for the final artwork in early 2009.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo Brings Pulsating Heart of South Africa March 15
Ladysmith Black Mambazo is an amazingly spiritual live experience. Don't miss this show. It's sure to be one of the season's best values. Artown presents Grammy Award-winning South African vocal ensemble Ladysmith Black Mambazo March 15 hosted by Grand Sierra Resort. It’s the first of Artown’s non-July event offerings in 2009 and is a must-see performance. Performing internationally for nearly 30 years, Ladysmith Black Mambazo has recorded 40 albums and performed alongside musical giants including Stevie Wonder, Josh Groban and Paul Simon. They are cultural and musical ambassadors to the world. The group’s harmonized traditional Zulu music, born in the mines of South Africa, is called Isicathamiya (Is-Cot-A-Me-Ya), and was highlighted on Paul Simon’s 1986 album “Graceland”,ť attracting the group a world of new fans. Just one year later they earned the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album for their premiere U.S. release, “Shaka Zulu”.ť

Tickets, priced at $45, $35 or $25, are on sale now at the Grand Sierra Resort Box Office and by phone at 775-789-2285, or online.
