On January 1, 1776, the American Flag consisted of 13 alternate red and white stripes and the
British Union Jack in the upper left-hand corner. Since that time, Congress has changed the flag 6 times.
In 1776, Betsy Ross reported that she sewed the first American flag. Though there is some
controversy surrounding the validity of her claim. Many affidavits from family members have been presented to confirm that fact.
